How to Optimize Blog Posts for Readers and Search Engines

In order to write articles that are easy to read and considered valuable by search engines, there are a few points to keep in mind. In recent years, three aspects of search engine optimization (SEO) have emerged that can be summarized as follows: quality, keywords, headlines, short paragraphs, and links.

Quality content attracts interested readers and pleases search engines

The success of an article begins with the consideration of a topic. The topic should be relevant to potential customers or target audiences. This can also be a very niche topic. In fact, a niche topic is sometimes more effective because there is less competition on search engines. Sometimes it helps to look at Google Trends at this stage to identify a relevant topic. Current trends can provide effective insight into what is currently being clicked on and read more frequently. It is particularly effective to jump on a trend early and ride the wave. Of course, this is not always possible, so the rule is: the earlier, the better.

The quality of the article is also integral. One way that articles are believed to slip down in the rankings is when people go back to Google from the article and then continue searching and clicking on other articles. This means that all important information should really be answered in the article and no questions should be left unanswered.

For example, if you are promoting an event in a blog article, you should make sure that the location, date, time, and website of the event are clearly mentioned. It is also best (depending on the promotion, of course) to directly answer questions such as how much the event costs, whether there is parking available, information about the program, etc.

This is also why longer articles tend to perform better. They answer more questions that the person might have. Of course, length does not necessarily equate to quality, but clicking “back” tends to be interpreted by Google as lower quality.

Keywords are essential for search engine optimization

In the early days of the internet, keywords were even more relevant for SEO than they are now. Search engines have since become more sophisticated and no longer rely on exact keywords. Nevertheless, it is important to include keywords when writing blog articles for readers as well as search engines (see what I did there?). When selecting keywords, you can again refer to Google Trends and see what works better or worse. You should also always consider what you yourself would google if you had a question that the text is supposed to answer. Once you have decided on a keyword or series of keywords, it is very important to use this keyword in the title, but also in the body text and subheadings.

Synonyms and related words are now also working better and better and should also be used. This makes the blog article appear more relevant to search engines and gives a clear signal that it is relevant to the respective search query.

Headings as breaks for the reader and as information for the search engine

Headings divide a blog article into smaller sections, making it easier to read. Instead of being faced with a wall of text, you can see how long each topic will take to read. This gives you bite-sized chunks that you can read bit by bit or skip if they don't interest you. That's why it's a good idea to include headings regularly. These should also be declared as such in the code.

So you shouldn't just bold a paragraph to make it recognizable as a separator for readers, you should also declare it as H2 (or H3…). This not only has the advantage of making the heading slightly larger and more prominent. Search engines also recognize which subsections there are and can match them with the relevant keyword. This helps search engines better recognize whether an article is relevant to the search query.

Short paragraphs are easy for everyone to digest

Large blocks of text are usually difficult to skim and are therefore more likely to be rejected by readers, especially on mobile devices. It is therefore advisable to keep individual paragraphs short and thus stretch the reader's attention with short breaks.

This not only keeps them on the website longer, but also sends a positive message about the blog article to search engines by reducing the number of “back” clicks.

Links are the root system of the internet, especially for SEO

The relevance of a website has long been measured by backlinks. If a website is linked to frequently, search engines perceive it as more valuable and trustworthy and rank it accordingly. That's why relevant links in an article are an effective tool for highlighting other sites while embedding the article in a network of articles, making it more relevant to search engines. That's why cross-promotions are an effective way to improve your own ranking.

All in all: Optimize where you can and then have fun with it

Ultimately, search engine optimization is like working with a black box, and the most important thing is to make sure your readers are satisfied with your articles. That's why you can only optimize to a certain extent, and the rest is simple: write a great article that you yourself would enjoy reading.
